Is your family looking for a weekly christian family devotion?
I have been looking for a weekly christian family devotion to do with my kids in the past few weeks. I always felt like they were not old enough. But my friend recently told me that if you don’t start things when they are young it won’t feel as natural when they are older either. It is kind of awkward for my husband and I to do the weekly christian family devotion on our own with little input from the kids. But we know laying this foundation will make a difference in the long run.
And since moving is a constant theme in our current lives. I am working to start setting up traditions that can move with us. Moving means everything is new, but there are ways to help your family adjust to the new life by keeping traditions. For some people, it means a Friday night movie night with pizza and popcorn. For others, it means having a special bedtime routine you can do from any location. And for us we are starting a weekly devotion that we can do while traveling, moving or getting settled in a new place.
When looking for a weekly christian family devotion I found it hard to find one that was even close to the level of my kids. The few I had found were more for teenagers than young children. And the number of questions and details made my head spin. It just wasn’t what we were looking for. I wondered if we would ever find something that would be a good fit.
Then my friend told me about her new 52 week devotional that she was coming out with. She then asked if I wanted to be part of her launch team. I was giddy and ready to jump on board.
So what is the weekly christian family devotion?
52 Commands of Jesus for Children
Susan took a yearlong study done at her church on the Commands of Christ. It was based on the Institute in Bible Life Principles. From that she created a 52-week study for parents to do with their children. Each week teaches a command and a character quality. It is simple, but effective. The questions are easy and straightforward. And as an added bonus the devotion can be used again and again. Especially, since each year the children will progress in age and deal with different life situations. And who doesn’t need a reminder.
As an added bonus, there are 52 coloring pages and even more electronic resources. My sons both loved coloring on the pages. I have had to let go that the color pages will be more like scribble pages, but that is okay too.
What I love most about the devotion is that it is a great way to get the conversation of God started at home.
Maybe you feel the way I do. You are stuck on how to bring God into your home each week. And have it be more than just Sunday school/other church activities. You hear about how the church does their part and you are supposed to do yours, but that leaves you uncertain on how to talk about God at home. If that is you, this devotion is a great starter.
And it is my hope that we can start here and as the kids grow older jump into deeper and more complicated workbooks. But first let me get a solid week of sleep before I have to think that much. We have only done one week of devotions. We started on Sunday night and it was a little awkward for my husband and I, but we got through it. Our kids are still pretty young. So, they did not really pay attention to us or the questions, but in time I’m sure that will change. And you have to start somewhere.
